Finland will become the new headquarters of ACTRIS, the European Aerosol, Clouds, and Trace gases Research Infrastructure, the Finnish Meteorological Institute announced on Monday.

The decision was made by a decision-making body made up of ministers from 18 EU countries.

ACTRIS is a collaborative project among European countries. The initiative involves researchers, observing stations, exploratory platforms, instrument calibration centres, and a data centre. The ACTRIS mission is to help resolve challenges such as poor air quality, health, sustainability and climate change.

”The placement of the ACTRIS headquarters in Finland shows that we have excellent scientific and administrative capacity to take on the responsibility of a leading role in an international mission,” said Juhani Damski, director general of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Finnish members of ACTRIS are Helsinki University, the University of Eastern Finland, Tampere University of Technology as well as the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
