Midsummer weekend gives Finns a chance to spend a long weekend at the cottage, but also means many services and opening hours are altered. Here's a quick run-down of the main points.
Alko stores, which are the only outlets allowed to sell stronger (over 5.5 percent) alcoholic drinks in Finland, are open as usual until midday on Friday 22 June, Midsummer's Eve. They're then closed until Monday 25 June.
Banks are closed on Friday 22 June and reopen on Monday 25 June.
Post offices are closed for the weekend from 6pm on Thursday. Exceptions are Helsinki's main Post Office, which is open until 12 noon on Midsummer Eve, and the Santa Claus Post Office in Rovaniemi, which is open every day as usual.
Pharmacies also shut down for the holiday. You can find your nearest pharmacy that's open during the holiday via the apteekki.fi website, if you type in your location under 'Apteekki Haku' (service only available in Finnish).
Rail services run to a Friday timetable on Thursday, a Saturday timetable on Friday, and Sunday timetables on Saturday and Sunday. Confused? More detailed information is available at VR's website.
Long-distance bus services are also reduced compared to a normal weekend. The go-to information source for them is Matkahuolto's website.
Road traffic is expected to be busiest on routes out of the Helsinki region between 11am and 8pm on Thursday. The second peak of Midsummer traffic is expected on Sunday between 10am and 8pm.
