A collision between a train and a private car at a level crossing in Tervola, Lapland has claimed the life of an elderly motorist.
The incident occurred around 1.00pm on Thursday at the Hallaojantie level crossing. Police say they are investigating the cause of the accident and are unable to say more at this stage.
National rail company VR said that train services between Rovaniemi and Oulu were delayed by an estimated 90 minutes because of the accident.
The company said that it provided passengers with bus connections between Kemi and Rovaniemi to replace train connections between Kuopio and Rovaniemi.
Last October a collision between a train and an Army vehicle carrying conscripts in the southern coastal municipality of Raseborg killed four people and injured four others.
In June this year accident investigators ruled that it had been almost impossible for the driver of the military vehicle to see the approaching train.
The Safety Investigation Authority issued a number of recommendations aimed at preventing similar accidents. They included closing some crossings and improving safety at others.
