Police begin an intense monitoring project on Monday that targets heavy vehicles across the country until Sunday. The national operation involves all of Finland's police departments.

Police road safety measures this year focus particularly on heavy vehicle traffic. The monitoring operation also aims to curb transportation-related crime, police announced Monday.

"One of the clearest problems uncovered in previous operations is that drivers do not all abide by guidelines concerning time spent on the road and resting," said police inspector Kari Onninen.

Police will be checking the cargo and condition of 1,700-1,800 lorries. Police have inspected 3,247 domestic and 729 foreign heavy vehicles in monitoring operations so far this year.
