Finland has moved with other European countries towards recognising Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's president, rather than incumbent Nicolás Maduro.

News of Finland's support for Guaidó came in a text message to Yle from Foreign Minister Timo Soini's special adviser Riikka Taivassalo.

"Like other EU countries, In order to support the constitutional process in Venezuela, Finland supports Guaidó as Venezuela's interim president," Taivassalo stated in the message.

Earlier on Monday, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Germany and the UK all officially recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela.

The European Parliament announced last Thursday that it considers Guaidó to be his country's interim president.

Venezuela's leadership has been in question since 10 January, when the country's legislature declared Maduro's 2018 re-election invalid and Guaidó as the country's legitimate president. Russia has been a staunch supporter of Maduro, while western countries have urged political change on the crisis-hit country where inflation was reported to have hit 80,000 percent in 2018.
