Finnish game developer Next Games has announced it is working on a new mobile game based on the retro supernatural Netflix series Stranger Things.
According to the company the game will be a location-based puzzle role-playing game (RPG) and is scheduled to be released on mobile platforms next year. The game will take place in the Stranger Things universe and is set in the 1980s, but the characters will be animated cartoon figures rather than human.
The Helsinki-based game company said the title will also utilise augmented reality technology (AR) along with support from GPS-based Google Maps to bring players into the popular show's supernatural world, according to Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen.
"Our core focus will be to deliver on Stranger Things' rich and intense themes like friendship and supernatural adventure, and translate these into snack-sized entertainment on your mobile device. Combined with Netflix’s second-to none ability to reach audiences across the globe, we will deploy all of our accumulated creative and technological expertise to create a game for the fans of the series all around the world," Huuhtanen said.

Next Games was the first game developer in Finland to be publicly listed and it specialises in games based on TV series and movies, as well as books.
In recent years the firm was behind a string of games based on the zombie survival television series The Walking Dead.
Last year Next Games used AR tech in its game The Walking Dead: Our World, which also uses GPS maps technology in an attempt to merge game play with the real world.
The third season of Stranger Things is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on 4 July.
