Remand hearing
Helsingin Sanomat (HS) reports on Friday that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Finland’s national law enforcement agency, will demand that the Kuopio school assailant be formally arrested and remanded in custody on suspicion of one count of murder and nine counts of attempted murder during today's remand hearing.
The attack by a 24-year-old man wielding a sword-like weapon on Tuesday claimed the life of one a young Ukrainian woman and injured nine others.
The Bureau is not taking a stance on the possible motive for the attack, writes HS. “It is still being investigated and we cannot comment on it,” detective chief inspector Jarkko Timonen told the paper.
HS, like numerous other media, planned to live stream Friday’s session.
The suspect, Joel Otto Aukusti Marin, is in an intensive care unit in hospital and participated via video link.
Marin was seriously injured on Tuesday when the police shot him after he refused to surrender to police when they responded to an emergency alert at the institution.
Flags flew at half-mast in Finland on Thursday in memory of a woman who was killed during an attack at a vocational college in Kuopio, eastern Finland on Tuesday.
He shoots, he scores
Meanwhile tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reports on the NHL season’s first Finnish goal, which was scored by Montreal Canadien Jesperi Kotkaniemi, with a total of six Finns scoring goals during the opening games of the NHL season, which took place on Thursday during the night between Thursday and Friday Finnish time.
IS writes that among the noteworthy performances on ice were those made by 18-year olds Kaapo Kakko and Ville Heinola, who made their debuts with the NHL in a match between the New York Rangers and the Winnipeg Jets. Heinola opened with a goal, which was one of the goals for the Rangers 6-4 win, and made history in his first NHL match.
Although the first Finnish goal was scored by Kotkaniemi in 2019-20 season, it wasn’t enough to snag a win for the Montreal Canadiens as they lost 4-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes in their season opener Thursday night in North Carolina.
