Helsinki City Council on Wednesday voted to move ahead with a major construction project to built new school, daycare and youth recreation facilities in the Länsi-Pakila district.
The close to 53 million euro project is intended to provide new buildings for around 950 schoolchildren and 240 daycare children. In addition, it includes construction of special education facilities for severely handicapped children.
Some of the new facilities will be made available for local community activities. Helsinki's YMCA association has plans to construct a multi-purpose sports hall in the area that will be used by local grades 7-9.
The project is to be completed in phases by 2023.
