Finnish pulp, paper and energy industry firm Valmet has announced plans to move a part of its fabrics business production unit in Tampere, Finland to its unit in Portugal, saying that the move could result in the loss of up to 90 jobs.
The company said it started co-determination talks with employee representatives on Tuesday and that the negotiations are expected to last six weeks.
The company said it was shifting its dryer fabric and wide filter fabric production in order to secure profitability and future competitiveness.
The Tampere fabrics unit employs a total of around 500 workers developing and manufacturing press felts, shoe press belts, dryer fabrics and wide filter fabric.
The possible 90 job cuts would take place next year, the company estimated, saying there could be possible temporary layoffs and reduction in employee hours this year.
Valmet employs about 5,100 people in Finland 2,000 of which in Tampere.
