More than half of Finnish residents say they plan to continue their tradition of domestic holiday trips this year, according to a survey by the Uutissuomalainen news group.
Forty-two percent of respondents said they plan to travel in Finland as they have done in the past, while 13 percent indicated they would be touring the country more than usual.
Just shy of a quarter said they intended to travel less than usual at home. Most respondents who said they were aiming to reduce holiday trips to other parts of the country lived in northern Finland, while a majority of those who planned to see more of the country hailed from the Uusimaa region in the south.
One-in-ten of all respondents said they would not be vacationing in Finland this summer. Over-70-year-olds accounted for the majority of respondents who said they would be staying put. Seventeen percent of this group said they would not be visiting other towns and cities.
However, four percent of over-70-year-olds said they planned to travel more domestically, while 47 percent indicated that their travel habits would not change.
The Foreign Ministry is still recommending that people avoid travelling abroad unless absolutely necessary, because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The poll was conducted by market research firm Tietoykkönen for Uutissuomalainen in late May. The number of respondents was 1,000 and the margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
