The value of exported Finnish goods dipped by more than 17 percent in the first half of the year compared to the same period of 2019.
The value of goods exported from Finland in June was just under 4.5 billion euros, about 15 percent lower than the previous June, Finnish Customs said on Monday.
Half-year trade deficit mushrooms to 1.7bn
Meanwhile the value of imports declined, but not by as much as exports. Imports of goods totalled in June 4.7 billion euros, which was 9.6 percent lower than in June 2019.
That more than doubled Finland's trade deficit in June to 209 million euros, compared to just 80 million a year earlier.
Between January and June, the value of exports declined by 17.3 percent while the value of imports dipped by 12.2 percent compared to the same period of last year.
The trade deficit for the first six months of the year was almost 1.7 billion euros, shooting up from just 10 million euros during the corresponding period of 2019.
Oil exports plunge by half
June's sharpest drop in exports was in refined oil products, sinking by 49.6 percent since June 2019. Iron and steel exports also fell steeply, by 43.6 percent. Meanwhile forest products went down by a relatively moderate 17 percent.
Exports to all of Finland's biggest trading partners slumped in early summer. Exports to Germany declined by over 17 percent, to neighbouring Sweden by just over 10 percent and to the US by around 27 percent compared to June last year.
