Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that the exploitation of foreign workers must be stopped by all possible means.
The premier, who tweeted the statement on Monday, was reacting to an extensive Yle report on the widespread exploitation of foreign construction workers in Finland published on the same day.
Yle's investigative report found that as many as hundreds of Ukrainian workers have been illegally employed at Finnish construction sites. Many were not paid wages to which they were legally entitled, and some were forced to live in substandard conditions.
The lengthy, multimedia article (in Finnish) noted that police are planning an extensive investigation into the cases cited in the report. Police currently suspect the cases involve internationally-organised financial and human trafficking crimes.
Some of the Ukrainian workers who came to Finland knew they were working off the books, but police suspect that some of the workers had been pressured or even forced to work on building sites.
"All means to end such an exploitative economy must be sought and used," Marin tweeted on Monday.
