Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) left Brussels as a precautionary measure on Friday, where she was attending a two-day European Council meeting after a member of the Finnish parliament announced he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Finns Party member of parliament Tom Packalén announced earlier on Friday that he had been diagnosed with a coronavirus infection. The 51 year-old, third-term MP from Helsinki has reported mild symptoms and has gone into home quarantine.

Prime Minister Marin has recently been in the same rooms as Packalén, including two committee chambers and other parts of the parliament building.

After learning Packalén had tested positive, Marin left Brussels for Helsinki where she will be tested and go into quarantine at her official residence.

The topics on the agenda of the European Council meeting are the Covid-19 pandemic, the future relationship between the EU and the UK, climate change and external relations. Before leaving Brussels, Prime Minister Marin asked her Swedish counterpart Stefan Löfven to represent Finland during the remainder of the gathering,

Earlier this month, Marin represented Sweden at a special EU summit, standing in for Swedish PM Stefan Löfven, so he could attend his mother's funeral.
