Finland’s national mail carrier Posti has announced the loss of 90 white-collar jobs after the completion of co-determination talks with employee unions.

The majority of redundancies will be among managers and individuals with expert and supervisory roles.

At the outset of negotiations, Posti management stated that job losses, which were required because of changes to the state firm’s operating model, would be limited to a maximum of 130 employees.

"It is very unfortunate that the current change in operating model has impacted staff," Posti Group CEO Turkka Kuusisto wrote in a press release. "We support our staff in the midst of this change. The customer needs of our business groups and the means of competition will differ even more in the future. We must ensure that our operating model meets these needs in the best possible way."

Posti’s press statement said that under the terms of the new operating model, the firm’s separate business groups will have more responsibility for results and a more comprehensive role in developing their own operations.

The firm’s freight service operations and logistics service division Transval were not affected by the negotiations. Overall, Posti employs a total of about 22,000 people.

The coronavirus crisis has created further challenges and uncertainty for the already-embattled state postal firm, with letter volumes falling to record lows during this year and the furloughing of staff leading to the suspension of Friday deliveries.
