Kilpisjärvi in Finland's northern "arm" near the country's northwesternmost point has seen very little snow so far this winter, according to meteorologist Ville Siiskonen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).
Scientists measured 16 centimetres of snow in Kilpisjärvi on Thursday, which is far less than the average depth of 39 centimetres for this time of year, according to Siiskonen. Other parts of Lapland have also had less of the white stuff than usual.
Temperatures in northern Lapland have been exceptionally mild this winter, with average temperatures in early December reaching -4.9 degrees Celsius, which is 4.4 degrees above average.
