Finland's government has proposed backing the Bexit deal, and now the legislature must decide if it supports the cabinet's position.

Parliament's Grand Committee will discuss the deal, reached on Christmas Eve, via video link at 2pm on Monday, the legislature said on Saturday.

The European Council still needs to sign off on the post-Bexit trade agreement reached between the EU and the UK. However member states’ legislatures, including Finland's, must agree to the deal ahead of it going to the Council.

Finland's Europe Minister, Tytti Tuppurainen (SDP), has welcomed the announcement of the Brexit deal, saying it was 'damage control' but also that Finland must approve it as soon as possible. Tuppurainen said that Finland and the EU would now do everything they could to ensure the agreement is in force from 1 January.
