Kela terminates several agreements with therapy centre Vastaamo

The benefits agency said the terminations were not related to the company's hacking scandal that took place last year.

Finland's social insurance institution Kela announced on Wednesday it was terminating several contracts with the private psychotherapy centre Vastaamo because some of the firm's therapists are not adequately qualified.

Kela said that it would terminate contracts with Vastaamo at the company's units in Turku, Tampere, Seinäjoki, Jyväskylä and Hämeenlinna.

The social insurance agency said that an examination of therapists at the firm who provide rehabilitation services found that some of the professionals did not meet requirements set in Kela's tender for services.

The contract terminations, which go into effect on 1 April, will affect around 100 of Vastaamo's clients.

"This is unpleasant, particularly for the clients. Time should be set aside for affected customers to find new therapists. We are doing our best to ensure that the clients' therapy continues without interruption," Sanna Bruun, group chief at Kela, said in a statement.

Kela said it also surveyed other contracts regarding Vastaamo and found that they were in order.

Last autumn, Vastaamo was the target of a large-scale data breach that affected an estimated 40,000 patients. Some of the victims were blackmailed by the hacker, who threatened to release the sensitive information online.

Kela noted that the contract terminations were not related to the data breach.
