The Finnish Safety Investigation Authority on Monday said it does not plan to open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a fire that destroyed an apartment building in the city of Savonlinna over the Midsummer weekend.

The authority added however that it will begin an investigation if a preliminary probe by police and emergency services reveals anything suspicious.

The fire is believed to have ignited when a lightning strike hit the block of flats just after midnight on Saturday morning.

About 15 residents were evacuated from the building as firefighters tackled the blaze. No serious injuries were reported.
