Mira Potkonen secured Finland's second medal of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after advancing to the semi-finals of the women's 60-kilogram class following a thrilling but narrow victory over Esra Yildiz of Turkey on Tuesday.
Potkonen is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal but still has a chance to also win either the gold or silver and — at the age of 40 — will set a new record as the oldest boxing competitor from any country to win an Olympic medal.
"It was a great match and it is a great feeling to go on to the next round," Potkonen told Yle Sport.
The Nokia native will next fight Brazil's Beatriz Ferreira in the semi-final at 8.15am Finnish time on Thursday.
"I am looking forward to a really good, hard-fought and high-quality bout," Potkonen's coach Maarit Teuronen said.
Potkonen also won bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, which was Finland's only medal of the games, and therefore makes history by becoming the first Finnish female to win medals at consecutive Olympics.
