Finland's mental health crisis helpline saw record numbers of calls in July, according to the NGO that runs the service.

Mieli Mental Health Finland says that the line received some 28,800 calls during the month, an average of more than 900 calls per day.

The previous monthly record was 27,520 calls in August 2020. The figure for July 2019, the last July before the pandemic, was 22,744.

Calls from young people at risk of self-harm were the most numerous, with young men at particular risk. Overall calls from people at risk of self-harm reduced slightly, although calls from their loved ones were at similar levels to 2020.

Mieli offers support and counselling services by phone in several languages including English. The English helpline is available at 09 2525 0113. Service times and more information is available at this link.
