A strong autumn storm that swept across much of Finland on Friday -- featuring high winds, rain, sleet and snow -- is expected to continue into Saturday.
As of mid-morning on Friday, the most powerful winds lashed the southern seaside town of Porvoo, where wind speeds reached 30.1 m/s.
The weather conditions have prompted warnings to be issued for dangerous conditions across the Gulf of Finland and possibly dangerous conditions around the Turku Archipelago. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), wind speeds of 17 m/s were measured in sea areas along Finland's western coast.
Hard winds have brought down power lines, cutting off electricity to households in Southeast Finland, in areas surrounding the municipality of Salo.
Heavy rain has also increased risks of flooding on smaller rivers, particularly south of Salo.
The stormy weather also cut power, at least intermittently, to more than 5,200 customers in around 27 municipalities in other parts of the country.
The precipitation in the form of snow and sleet have prompted warnings for slippery road conditions to be issued across much of the country. Warnings for poor driving conditions were issued on Friday in the regions of Satakunta, Pirkanmaa, Central Finland, Kainuu, North Savo, North Karelia as well as Ostrobothnia.
The storm is expected to continue for the remainder of Friday in southern and central areas, as the low pressure system causing it slowly moves eastward. The precipitation will likely turn to sleet in some areas as cooler air from the north arrives later in the day.
