Police in Helsinki have caught a reindeer that had been spotted roaming along Hämeenlinnanväylä in the city's Haaga district on Friday afternoon.

Further sightings of the animal had been reported to the police later in the day on Friday and also on Saturday morning.

In a tweet, pictured below, police said they caught up with the "tired fugitive" in the capital's City Garden on Saturday afternoon.

The animal was checked by a veterinarian before being transported to Korkeasaari zoo. The veterinarian also confirmed that the animal is a reindeer, police added.

Sightings of the reindeer on the streets of the capital caused quite a stir on social media, and police said they are still working to discover the animal's owner.

On Sunday the zoo released a photo of the animal, saying that it was recuperating and appeared to have a healthy appetite.
