Prosecutors have decided not to press charges against Deputy Mayor Anni Sinnemäki (Green) over her failure to recuse herself from a meeting that decided to grant her friends' parents permission to build on valuable land in a prosperous Helsinki neighbourhood.

The Meilahti district is dominated by historic villas, and normally has strict zoning rules controlling new construction.

Sinnemäki's friend Pihla Viitala, a well-known actress, lived in a house built on her parents' land thanks to special permission. Neighbours had complained about the decisions surrounding the development of the Viitalas' villa.

Prosecutors have now decided that police did not uncover evidence that Sinnemäki had done anything that would break the law on breaching official duties.

In 2021 the Supreme Administrative Court had already ruled that Sinnemäki had no reason to recuse herself from the decision-making process.
