The library Bridge in the city of Turku was lit up in the colours of the Finnish flag on Friday evening in honour of National Coalition Party MP Ilkka Kanerva, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 74 after a serious illness.
The blue and white illumination remained visible until dawn on Saturday.
City authorities had also arranged for flags to fly at half mast throughout Friday as a mark of respect to the Turku-based politician.
"Thank you for your work for the city of Turku, for the people of Turku and for Finland. The grief is so great," the City of Turku wrote on Twitter.
Kanerva had been a member of Finland's parliament since 1975, when he was first elected in the South-west Finland district. He also served as a minister in three separate governments, including stints as as Transport Minister, Minister for Employment and Foreign Minister.
