Directed and written by Mikko Myllylahti, Metsurin Tarina or the Woodcutter's Story will premiere on Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film will compete for the Camera d'Or for best directorial debut at this year's festival, as well as the Critics' Week award.
The Woodcutter's Story follows a man as he goes through a series of tragic events in rapid succession, but still faces the world with a calm optimism.
The setting is northern Finland during the middle of winter, with filming taking place in the Finnish region of Kainuu last year.
The public release date for Finnish theatres is October 2022.
This is not Myllylahti's first time in Southern France. He has worked with director Juho Kuosmanen in the past and his short film The Tiger premiered in Cannes in the past.
Last year, Finnish film Kuosmanen's Compartment No. 6 won the Grand Prix award at the Cannes film festival and the Finnish production The Gravedigger's Wife was also part of the festival's lineup. Compartment No. 6 was also on the shortlist for Oscar nomination.
According to Myllylahti, something has changed in the Finnish film industry and the windows are now open to Europe and beyond.
"We are still a small country, but I now feel that we have every chance to win even the Palm d'Or or the Oscar, as long as the films are still funded and auteurs encouraged to have their own voice and courage," Myllylahti told Yle.
