An electrical fault on a railway line brought train traffic around the Helsinki area to a virtual standstill on Monday morning, and is expected to lead to delays to services across the country.

While the fault has been repaired, national rail operator VR told passengers to be prepared for significant delays on both long-distance and short-distance services.

Cancellations of some local services are also expected, the company added.

VR's Communications Specialist Elina Äijö told Yle that even though the fault was fixed quickly, it will have effects on train traffic until at least Monday afternoon.

In a statement on Twitter, Fintraffic Railway — which is responsible for railway traffic control and management — wrote that the power failure led to a complete standstill on the Helsinki-Ilmala and Helsinki-Oulunkylä lines.

The fault was discovered at 10:30a.m. and was repaired by 11:20a.m, VR stated.
