Turku Mayor Minna Arve (NCP) has suggested shutting down Russia's consulate in the city.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Arve said she hoped the Finnish Foreign Ministry would start discussions on closing down the consulate.
"Turku doesn't need Russia's presence in the city," the National Coalition Party politician tweeted.
However, later on Monday, Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Pekka Haavisto (Green) said that Finland does not plan to close Russian consulates in the country.
He noted that taking such measures would involve countermeasures by Russia, including the closures of Finnish embassies in St Petersburg, Murmansk, Petrozavodsk and others.
"There are reasons to keep our consulates open in Russia, but the matter is constantly being monitored," Haavisto said.
Turku was formerly the twin city of Russia's St Petersburg, but in February the city officially severed that status.
Arve told the paper that her desire to eject the Russian consulate has developed over time. With far fewer people now seeking tourist visas to travel to Russia, the need for the consulate had dramatically decreased, she explained.
Helsingin Sanomat was the first to report the mayor's statement.
