A conscript who suffered a gunshot wound to the head at the Kainuu Brigade on Thursday has died, the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) announced on Friday.
The life-threatening injury was caused by a round firing from the conscript's own rifle at a shooting range at the brigade, in the town of Kajaani, according to local police.
The conscript succumbed to the injury on Thursday afternoon at Kuopio University Hospital.
Police said the conscript's rifle fired for an unknown reason right before the shooting range exercises were about to begin.
Police said no one is suspected of a crime and that the incident would continue to be investigated.
In a tweet on Friday, the FDF announced the news of the death "with a heavy heart," and shared the grief with the victim's relatives, friends and fellow conscripts.
It called for flags to be flown at half-mast at all FDF facilities on Friday.
