Gaming and IT bosses lead Finland's top earners list

Every year, the tax authority publicly unleashes a deluge of income and tax information, a practice which has become a tradition in a society that otherwise emphasises personal privacy.

The country's biggest earner in 2021, Ilkka Paananen, is one of the founders of mobile gaming firm Supercell. Paananen earned 58.6 million euros and paid nearly 21.9 million euros last year, according to tax data revealed by the Finnish Tax Administration on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Ilkka Teppo, founder of gaming company Reworks, raked in 46.3 million euros and paid 15.7 million euros in income tax. The earnings were related to the acquisition of 80 percent of the company's shares by an Israeli company, Playtika, for around 340 million euros. Reworks is known for its home decoration app, Redecor.

Another Supercell founder, Mikko Kodisoja, earned 35.3 million euros, with 13.2 million euros going to the tax office. Kodisoja was the country's top earner in 2020.

Jarno Heikkinen is one of the founders of gaming company Reworks and the CEO of Capture Monkey, and earned 31.7 million euros last year while paying about 10.7 million euros in taxes.

Meanwhile, Juha Varelius took in 27.8 million euros in 2021. He is the CEO of software firm Qt Group and the former chief of Digia, a software and service company. He paid 13.2 million euros in taxes.

Equipped with graphs, charts and occasional exclamation points, media outlets also make sure to point out how much the country's biggest earners pay in taxes.

People's income tax information is public in Finland. This year, however, around 1,700 people requested to have their names removed from the list provided to the media.
