Finland paying "extra month" of child allowance benefit ahead of Christmas

The one-time extra payment is meant to strengthen families' purchasing power, according to social insurance agency Kela.

Families will receive double the normal child allowance benefit in December, the Social Insurance Institution Kela announced on Friday.

The one-time extra payment will be made according to the regular schedule, on 23 December, the agency said.

The goal of the Child Benefit Act and the Act on Social Assistance approved by parliamentarians "is to strengthen the purchasing power of families with children at a time of rising prices," Kela said in a statement.

Monthly child benefit payments are issued to all children under the age of 17 who permanently reside in Finland. The payouts increase with each additional child.

For example, the normal level of benefits paid for families with two children amount to just under 200 euros per month, so the doubled December payment would amount to just under 400 euros.

The double payment will not count against other social assistance payments that families may be receiving, the agency said.

Kela also noted that the child benefit is tax-free income and not affected by a parents' income level or assets.

Single-parent families receive a bit more than their two-parent counterparts, with a single-parent family of two children normally receiving just over 325 euros per month.

In its announcement about December's double payments, Kela included a chart with the benefit levels of various family sizes.
