Age Limit for Lorry Drivers Going Up

The age limit for driving heavy vehicles is to rise to 21. According to the Jyväskylä-based newspaper Keskisuomalainen, the proposed amendment to Finnish legislation is required by the Driving Licence Directive of the European Union.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications has asked the EU for permission to deviate from part of the directive, so that rescue vehicles could still be driven by 18-year-olds.

The EU is still working on the directive, and the Finnish legislative change would come into effect at the end of the decade.

Changes are also in store for the requirements for licences for professional drivers, who will be required to undergo more extensive training than now.
