Illicit Music Downloading Continues Unabated

The illegal downloading of music files in Finland has not declined despite a new law that took effect at the beginning of January, reports the Tampere daily Aamulehti.

The new copyright legislation forbids such file copying. No exact figures are available on the number of such downloads.

However the total volume of internet traffic has continued to grow steadily, and experts say transfer of music and film files accounts for a large proportion of that volume.

An estimated 90 percent of music downloads are unlawful. The music industry is focusing its anti-piracy efforts at major distributors so individual listeners run a relatively low risk of being caught.

No criminal charges have been filed since the law took effect more than a month ago, although several cases are pending.
