Cold Snap Keeping Birds Away

Birds are migrating to Finland later than normal this year due to the prolonged cold weather.

The long-lasting cold spell means that most birds have not yet set off on their trip to Finland. Normally at this time of year, bird migration is well underway.

The majority of migratory birds travelling to Finland come from southwestern and western Europe, and Africa. Once the ice has melted, the first birds are detected on beaches and inland water sources. In particular, experts have kept an eye out for water fowl this year, due to fears they could carry the bird flu virus.

Weather forecasters predict that Finland's cold spell will continue through at least next week.
