Rape Victims Seeking Help Online

A third of victims of sexual violence have found help through an online rape crisis hotline, according to a study by Tukinainen, a crisis centre for sexual assault victims.

Tukinainen says its web-based counselling, which was launched this spring and functions through complete anonymity, has become a popular feature of its services.

“Communicating on the web is a way for those to seek help who are too shy to speak to someone on the phone or walk in the door,” says Heli Heinjoki of the association.

Today rape victims are increasingly contacting Tukinainen before going to the authorities. The organisation receives some 10,000 calls annually from rape victims.

“During the summer it’s more difficult for people to get help, as psychiatric services are for example scaled back. Rape victims are often left to their own devices,” says Heinjoki.

Rape victims tend to be apprehensive about going to the authorities. Oftentimes victims don’t report sexual attacks for many weeks. Women between the ages of 21 and 30 are the most typical Finnish rape victims.
