RoPS Player In Custody

A Rovaniemen Palloseura player is being questioned by police in Rovaniemi. The questioning is reportedly connected to an investigation into betting irregularities in the League Cup match between Tampere United and Rovaniemen Palloeura (RoPS) which was played last Wednesday.

“I can confirm this,” RoPS CEO Antti Hietakangas told Ilta-Sanomat’s sport desk. “The police took our player to the police station yesterday, and that’s the situation now, unfortunately.”

According to Ilta-Sanomat’s sources the player is connected to a Singaporean man who was detained last week when trying to leave the country on a false passport. The man had arrived in Helsinki from Rovaniemi.

Musonda's future at the club could be in doubt if he is found to have done something wrong. RoPS fired Estonian defender Alexander Kulik in 2008 when his performance came under suspicion in a game that saw strange betting patterns.

RoPS were apparently unaffected by Musonda's absence today, when they won 2-1 away at KuPS despite the absence of coach John Allen, who was suffering from flu.
