VR reprices rail tickets

Finnish state railways VR plans to start pricing tickets based on demand—a practice borrowed from the airline industry. The aim is to encourage rail passengers to travel on less congested trains.

As of September 14, the cheapest tickets will be those bought well in advance. In the future, tickets sold on trains will always be more expensive than those purchased before departure.

VR says the ticketing overhaul will make buying a train ticket online more convenient as tickets can be sent to customers’ email or mobile phones.

VR raised its ticket prices by a few percent at the beginning of this year.
