Christian Democratic Info Chief: Marginal Groups Should Leave Mainstream Culture Alone.

The chief of information services for the Christian Democratic Party, Asmo Maanselkä has let it be understood that the pepper spray gas attack on last weekend's Pride march in Helsinki was the fault of march participants themselves.

Writing in the letters to the editor column of the newspaper Keskisuomalainen, Maanselkä stated that "the marginal should respect the values of the majority".

On Thursday, the chair of the Christian Democratic Party, Päivi Räsänen speculated in her blog that the attack against the Pride march could be interpreted as "a reaction against the powerful liberal value development of the political elite".

Asmo Maanselkä, who is both the chief of the party's information services and a city councillor in Jyvaskyla, implied in the piece published Friday that the attack was the fault of marchers themselves.

"It is forgotten in the debate that the Pride march is also a provocation against traditional values. Those who provoke generally want to provoke those with differing views," Maanselkä wrote.

He continued, "Instead of the Pride provocations, the marginal (groups) should respect the values of the majority and should understand to leave mainstream Finnish culture alone".

In a statement issued later on Friday, Maanselkä emphasized he was worried about a possible increase in violence which he condemned in all circumstances. He added his newspaper comments were an attempt to analyse the relationship between mainstream society and minorities, and how peace in society could be guaranteed in the future.

Maanselkä said he was sorry if his writings caused offence.

Earlier, representatives of the sexual minorities organization SETA deplored the original comments.

"Indeed it feels bad, especially this opinion piece. It is a demand for sexual minorities to hide, which according to the writer would be the only means of peaceful coexistence," said SETA vice-chair Elina Laavi. "The Pride march is a traditional event that draws a lot of rainbow families and relatives of members of sexual minorities. It is more a matter of joy than of provocation...It is a positive event," Laavi added.

Räsänen: The work of troublemakers

Interviewed by YLE before she had read the piece, Christian Democratic Party chair Päivi Räsänen said that Maanselkä is responsible for his own text.

"I can say myself that I haven't felt the Pride match to be provocative. Everyone has the right to express opinions in a peaceful manner," Räsänen said.

She also did not believe that the gas attack, nor the vandalism against the SETA office were signs of majority frustrations.

"It looks like the works of troublemakers. Their views are hardly the same as those of the majority of the people," Räsänen stressed.

The Christian Democrats and the Greens have been at odds over the issue of gender-neutral marriage legislation. Räsänen denied that statements in recent days were a tactical move in the run-up to next spring's elections.
