The region of Uusimaa suffered the most fire deaths, with 19 people succumbing to flames there. Twelve people lost their lives in blazes in the region of Pirkanmaa. However no one died in fires in the region of Southern Ostrobothnia or the Åland Islands.

The Finnish National Rescue Association says it believes nearly half of the victims died of flames in their own homes. One-fifth of the victims were women. However the most frequent victims were men between the ages of 40 and 60 who were under the influence of alcohol.

Fire deaths in Finland have remained among the highest in western countries since the turn of the century.
