Vanhanen and Blair: No Break in EU Enlargement

Finnish Prime Minister Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and his British counterpart Tony Blair have rejected any new barriers or new conditions on future EU enlargement.

Meeting in London at 10 Downing Street on Thursday, the two took the stand that there should not be any break in the enlargement process and that the candidates must be treated fairly.

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has suggested that there be a break in EU enlargement until the EU reaches agreement on a constitution.

Vanhanen and Blair also discussed other issues related to the EU and the upcoming unofficial Lahti summit which takes place on the 20th of this month..

Blair furthermore thanked Finland for its contribution in the peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan, where he said Finland has an important role to play, as well as in other Nato-led missions.
