Psychiatrist Shortages Continue

Finland continues to suffer from a shortage of psychiatrists, according to the newspaper Suomenmaa. During the recession of the early 1990s, open psychiatricic posts were not filled and study spots in medical school were cut.

In the capital region, high demand has allowed many psychiatrists to transfer to private practice. In Lapland and the Kainuu region, psychiatrist shortages are relentless.

For example in Rovaniemi, six of ten psychiatrist positions have not been filled. In the Satakunta region, half of the psychiatrist posts are empty.

Psychiatry is a particularly high paced profession, making the move to the private sector from the public sector especially attractive.
