Car Sales Increase

Car sales appear to be speeding up. In the first to months of this year, more than 33,500 new cars were registered in Finland. This is 22 percent more than at the same time last year.

According to Statistics Finland, the most popular makes of new cars in Mainland Finland are Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.

The increase is attributed to reforms in car taxation, aimed at favouring models with lower emissions.

For the first time, more new cars with diesel engines were registered than cars with gasoline (petrol) engines. Of the approximately 12,000 cars registered in February, slightly more than half run on diesel.

Minister of Finance Jyrki Katainen says that the state is losing tax revenue through the reform, but that the changes mean a decrease in emissions from cars.
