UN Ambassador: Finland’s reliable reputation may help win Security Council seat

The representative of Finland to the United Nations, Ambassador Jarmo Viinanen, says that the country’s stable and reliable reputation could help it get elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Viinanen estimates that Finland has a good chance in winning the election held in October.

Finland’s consistent foreign policy over decades has created an image of a reliable country, he specifies.

The UN Ambassador adds that bilateral relations are also important in the election, as countries are likely to support nations close to them.

Along with Finland, Luxembourg and Australia are vying for a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2013–2014 term.

President remains confident

Finland's President Sauli Niinistö is confident the country will gain a seat on the United Nation's Security Council.

Speaking a foreign ministry meeting of ambassadors in Helsinki on Tuesday, he said Finland should redouble its efforts to attain this goal.
