Port operator Steveco’s dockers have downed their tools in Hamina, Kotka and Vuosaari to protest staff cuts. The stevedores won’t return to work until 6am Monday, according to the Transport Workers' Union (AKT).

On Thursday Steveco announced plans to mothball operations at the Hamina harbour, firing all 97 workers.

Call centres hang up

Sonera's customer service reps are meanwhile striking on Friday, with some 3,000 employees in Finland staying home from work. The job action affects call centres as well as Sonera shops.

The teleoperator says customers phoning in may face long queues.

The action is being staged by the Trade Union Pro to protest personnel policies.
