Fazer bakery ammonia leak solved – No pies yet

The work-halting ammonia gas leak in a bakery in Lappeenranta was due to a faulty valve. The valve will be replaced on Tuesday night, and the condition of the Fazer bakery will be checked on Wednesday. Karelian pies cannot be baked in the facility or delivered until then.

The location of the leak was ascertained over the weekend, but it was not until Tuesday that the reason for the sudden seepage was revealed to be a sudden malfunction of the valve.

”The necessary repairs will be made tonight and on Wednesday the machinery will be reassessed,” supply chain manager Jarmo Lappi from Fazer Bakeries says.

Lappi says that as a single operation the repairs are not a tall task, but production cannot continue until the South Karelian Rescue Service has deemed the facility to be safe.

Ammonia is used as a coolant in bakeries, and the system allowed Karelian pies to be cooled down quickly immediately after baking.

Breads and buns have resumed production, but not so products such as Karelian pies that require cooling. The Lappeenranta bakery produces all of the Fazer's Karelian pies sold in Finland.
