The new pension law is in line with last year's pact between labour market groups, who agreed that the age should be incrementally raised from 63 to 65.

Parliament has initially approved the government's plan to lower car taxes.

In a preliminary vote on Friday, MPs agreed that automotive taxes will decline by just over five percent over the next four years, based on vehicle emissions.

Opposition parties filed a motion calling for some of the money that is to be spent on financing the tax cut to be diverted to support public transport in rural areas. However this proposal was voted down by a margin of 102-62.

Lawmakers also approved the content of legislative reform aimed at raising the retirement age. The new law is in line with last year's pact between labour market groups, who agreed that the pension age should be incrementally raised from 63 to 65.

The change hardly stirred any opposition, except from the small Swedish People's Party, which wanted an exemption for employees of the Finnish Defence Forces. However no other groups backed its motion on the issue.
