The municipality of Tampere is moving some 60 children to new daycare spots after it was announced that a private nursery in the city will be closed from Monday. Scott Rizzo, who heads up the English International School of Tampere, said that the centre will not close but that a large group of children will move to municipal daycare centres.

Inspectors from the local regional state administrative agency decided to remove children from the school after they uncovered serious and ongoing deficiencies there.

The playschool was found to be in breach of the conditions governing the operation of private daycare centres in Finland, with among other issues the staff's competence to teach.

Maria Päivänen of Tampere City Council said that uncertified staff can work with children so long as there is a qualified staff member on hand, but that condition had not been met in this case.

Parents are advised to contact the municipality of Tampere for more information about the replacement daycare spots available to them.
