The sale of consumer fireworks for the New Year's season began on Tuesday.

According to current legislation, people in Finland may set off fireworks between 6pm on 31 December and 2am on 1 January, although there have been calls in recent years for a ban on the retail sales and personal use of fireworks.

In addition, a citizens' initiative to ban the non-professional use of fireworks gathered more than 65,000 signatures in 2018.

As sales begin, authorities have urged people to follow safety rules, with the use of safety goggles recommended in particular. In addition, fireworks should be set off away from residential areas.

Fireworks lead to the hospitalisation of between 10 and 30 people every year.
