This week All Points North looks at what people need to do to get their tax cards in order at the start of the year.

Income tax deductibles vary from year to year, with 2023 seeing an end to those for mortgage interest—a reversal from full mortgage interest rate deductions a decade ago.

Antti Oksanen of the Taxpayers Association of Finland (TAF) told APN that households can immediately make use of a new tax credit allowing for the deduction of electricity bills from income taxes—provided costs exceed 2,000 euros between January and April.

"You basically apply for a new tax card, which will take this forthcoming deduction into account and then you will in effect have a lower tax percentage."

How to save on your taxes this year

With general elections on the way this spring, the show also asks why this poll is being framed in the context of a culture war, and whether the National Coalition Party and the Finns Party could work together in government.

"They do share a lot of opinions about the national debts, for example, and economics," said Linda Pelkonen, from Yle's Politiikkaradio show. "But is that enough?"

As heavy snowfall turns to slush around the country this week, APN follows up on audience questions about Finnish driving culture. And to satify its sweet tooth, the podcast also revisits its favourite Finnish pastry.
