The Finnish Red Cross (FRC) will contribute 300,000 euros from its disaster fund to the international relief operations in Turkey and Syria following Monday's devastating earthquakes.
In a statement, the organsiation said that the money will go towards helping people injured and displaced by the disaster, with half going to Turkey and the rest to Syria.
In addition, an aid truck loaded with supplies left the FRC's logistics warehouse in Tampere on Friday morning, bound for Turkey.
FRC's Head of International Emergency Operations Marko Korhonen told Tampere-based newspaper Aamulehti that a request for help from Turkey arrived on Wednesday evening.
As of Friday morning, over 21,000 people are known to have died following the 7.8-magnitude and 7.5-magnitude quakes that struck the region of southern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday.
Although search and rescue operations are ongoing, time is increasingly against rescue workers and volunteers as any possible survivors will have spent a fourth night in the freezing cold.
Furthermore, many hospitals in the region have been damaged, meaning injured people must be transported for treatment to towns that have escaped the devastation.
The Finnish government earlier this week channelled one million euros in humanitarian aid to Turkey and Syria, while a team of Finnish rescue workers and IT professionals also joined the international relief effort.
