Many design and security features of Finnish passports and ID cards will be updated next month, with new versions issued as of 13 March, according to the police.

"The features and layout of the permit documents are completely redesigned," Chief Inspector Juhani Ruutu of the National Police Board said.

New design

The Finnish coat of arms now has a less prominent role on the passport front cover, moving from the middle of the page to the upper left corner.

The new look drew inspiration from the Finnish Archipelago Sea, featuring imagery from one of Finland's most iconic landscapes, according to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Updated security features

A new security feature for the passports and ID cards is a 2D barcode for easier machine recognition and reading.

Security and layout updates will not, however, affect the validity or use of passports, ID cards or residence permit documents issued before the revamp.

Residence cards will also receive minor technical updates.

The firm Thales DIS Finland is set to supply the passports for the next five years, with the firm chosen following a competitive tendering process.

The new passport design features can be seen in a video posted by the police on YouTube.
